Last Tuesday night, the husband and I procured free tickets through TCM’s website to see “Rio Bravo” at the Texas Theatre in Dallas. Hmmm, that name sounds familiar? That’s because it’s the theatre that back on November 22, 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested in shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But back to the movie. “Rio Bravo” hit movie houses for the first time in 1959. It starred John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, Ricky Nelson, and our hostess for the evening, Angie Dickinson. She was joined by TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz.

I never knew she was so funny! They obviously have a very comfortable working relationship, and they both kept us in stitches. As someone who’s worked with many of classic Hollywood’s leading men, Ms. Dickinson has many stories to tell.

After the interview, it was time for the movie to begin! Now, I had never actually seen the entire movie from start to finish. It was a joy to see such a classic movie in a classic Dallas theatre. You can never go wrong with John Wayne.

Once the movie ended, we took the opportunity to take some quick photos of the Texas Theatre. It was originally built in 1931, at the height of the Art Deco period. Although it was nearly lost to a fire, it has been restored to its former glory.

So, if you ever find yourself in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, stop by the Texas Theatre and experience its history for yourself.
